  • In search of a solution for digital assembly, we developed the Robotik Toolbox: a system based on the open-source technology ROS, which makes the use of robotics possible for every craft company. A system by craftsmen for craftsmen and with which the control of robots becomes as effortless and natural as that of a smartphone.

  • Five minutes were enough to explain the functioning of the Robotik Tollbox to Chancellor Angela Merkel and she was already controlling the cobot with a casual point of the finger. Economics Minister Peter Altmeier took a little more time for his visit and joked in French with our robotics expert at the IHM 2019 while testing the tool of the future for the skilled trades.

Applications

It’s all a question of the right programming and a successful UX design.

  • The first development of the Robotik Toolbox for Strehl Kinderreha Orthopädietechnik from Bremervörde has proven itself in orthotic production: it saves time, is clean and besides increases the attractiveness of the craft.

  • The KUKA Agilus has found its place in the machine shop. With the right end effector, we use by means of a CNC module for projects in which it can score with its 6 axes.

  • The cobot as an extended arm of the artist: equipped with a pen, a KUKA Iiwa LBR paints the lines which you have drawn on a smartphone, tablet or multitouch table on an easel.

  • Presented for the first time at IHM 2019, the ScanInform robotics application shows how a depth camera can be used to process a three-dimensional workpiece in real time in a way that even amateurs can understand.

Research

A spirit of discovery for forward-looking craftsmanship

  • In a ZIM research project (Central Innovation Programme for SMEs based on a resolution of the German Bundestag), we joined forces with the TU Berlin to take on the challenge of teaching a collaborative robot dexterity. Its task: to independently assemble complex geometries in space in order to digitally support assembly in the future.

    So far, humans still do better.
    The question now is: for how much longer?

  • The next step in the implementation of new technologies: combining artificial intelligence and robotics to constructively address demographic change and automate unpleasant, unhealthy activities of the skilled trades.
